Obituary of Phyllis Marie Penfield

Phyllis M. Penfield, 81, of Conneaut, passed away peacefully, Friday, January 15, 2016 at UPMC- Hamot Medical Center. She was born January 1, 1935, in Conneaut the daughter of the late Clarence Edward "Ed" and Hilda (Haas) Kent, and remained a lifelong area resident. Phyllis graduated from Conneaut High School Class of 1952 and served as the class secretary and helped organize many class reunions. Phyllis worked at Cook Drug as a pharmaceutical tech for many years, and was also the manager at Crown Jewelers in Conneaut. She was also employed with Applicator Services, Blick's Photography and was a civilian clerk with the Ladd Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska. Phyllis was a member of the New LEAF UMC (formerly First United Methodist Church) for over 50 years and the United Methodist Women's Group. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Conneaut Lodge #86 and the American Legion Cowle Post Woman's Auxiliary. In her younger years she enjoyed bowling and served as the league secretary on Saturday nights. She enjoyed traveling with the Happy Travelers, going on Bus trips and Cruise's. Phyllis collected stamps, enjoyed scrapbooking, as well as going to auctions to find other collectables. She particularly liked going to Hammer Time, Hamilton's Auction House, Gary Heaven's and John Erdle's Auctions. Phyllis will forever be missed by her son Mark A. Penfield of Conneaut; sister, Evelyn Dorchester of Cochranton, PA; sister-in-law, Joy Kent of Conneaut; as well as many nieces and nephews; companion Robert "Bumper" Johnston; and many friends. She is preceded in death by her brother James E. Kent; brother-in-law, Leland Dorchester; and her parents. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Thompson-Smith-Nesbitt Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, with Rev. Jan Walsh, officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens in N. Kingsville. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 from 3-5 and 7-9 PM at the THOMPSON-SMITH-NESBITT FUNERAL HOME, 345 Main St., Conneaut.
