Obituary of Clara M Smiley

Clara M. Smiley, 98, of Lake Rd., Conneaut passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at the Villa at the Lake. Clara was born on September 5, 1917 in Watseka, Illinois the daughter of Charlie and Fannie S. (Foreman) Grice. She graduated from Conneaut High School Class of 1935. Clara married the love of her life George Smiley in Conneaut on September 5, 1942. Clara was retired from Walter Paull Insurance Company, where she was the secretary for many years. She was an avid golfer and was a member of Windy Hill and the Conneaut Country Club. She took great pride that she made a “hole in one.” Clara also enjoyed spending time on the boat and fishing. She was very independent and has been a fighter over the past few years. Mrs. Smiley is survived by nieces and nephews; Fred (Carolyn) Holden, Frances Holden, Jerry (Jane) Grice, Janet (Edroe) Turner, Kathryn (Jeffery) Horwood, Carol (Al) English, Ann (Don) Cederholm, Robert (Ann) Gulick, Sue Holden, and Susan Holden, as well as many more distant relatives; and many special friends, including David and Janet Lake. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Howard Smiley, Jr., in 2010; siblings, Ernest Grice, Vera Haas, Yola Whaley, Cynthia Holden, Gene Grice, William Grice and Bessie Gulick; nieces and nephews, Warren Grice, Betty DiGiacomo, Charles Holden, Ervin Holden, George Grice, Susan Persichello, and Richard Gulick. Funeral services will be held, Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 12 (Noon), at the Thompson Smith Nesbitt Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut with Pastor Tim Kraus, officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 AM until the time of service at 12PM.
