Type Obit HereRichard (Red) Samuel Markijohn, 86, passed away on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at University Hospitals Geneva Medical Center with his son Tony by his side. Richard was born on May 13, 1930 in Conneaut, Ohio to Samuel and Bernice Markijohn. He was the eldest of four children and lived in Conneaut his entire life, graduating from Conneaut High School in 1948. After high school, Richard joined the army where he served in Germany during the Korean War as a Corporal in the 317 Engineer Pontoon Bridge Company. Before enlisting in the army, he worked at the Conneaut Bakery where he met the love of his life, Marcelene Mary Cifelli who he married on September 25, 1951. After the army, Richard worked for and then owned Thayers Shoe Store in downtown Conneaut. Later, he worked at numerous manufacturing plants in Ashtabula County including Sherwin-Williams and Nortons. He went to work for the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Company in 1972 and retired after 20 years of service. Richard enjoyed cooking for his family, especially chocolate chip peanut butter cookies. He was a member of the Conneaut Fish and Game Club as well as the Windy Hill Senior Golf League. His hobbies included "puttering in the garage," reading and watching old westerns, as well as being an avid Cleveland sports fan. During his retirement, Richard also worked at Western Auto in Conneaut. Besides his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years Marcelene, his son, Joseph Anthony Markijohn, his brothers, Darrell Markijohn and Bruce Markijohn as well as his brother-in-law, James Pelyhes and sister-in-law, June Markijohn. He is survived by his sister, Maxine (Markijohn) Pelyhes, his children, Rick (Michelle) Markijohn of West Springfield, PA, Julie Babich of Hermitage, PA, Marcie (Ken) Kozack of Fairfield, PA, Anthony (Anne) Markijohn of Geneva, Ohio and daughter-in-law Patricia Markijohn of Willard, Ohio, fourteen grandchildren (Mike, Nick, Payton, Misti, Joseph, Matthew Markijohn, Jon and Justin Klink, Nicole Grata, Michael, Adam and Isabella Kozack, Gianna and Dominic Markijohn) and eight great-grandchildren. Survivors also include his brothers and sisters-in-law Jean Markijohn, Leo (Yvette) Cifelli, Anthony (Irene) Cifelli, Joyce (Paul) Shellhammer and Len Cifelli. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Thompson-Smith-Nesbitt Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, with Rev. Joyce Shellhammer, Pastor of the First Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, where American Legion Cowle Post #151 will honor their departed comrade. Calling hours will be observed at the funeral home Monday from 6 to 8 PM and Tuesday from 10 AM until time of services at 11 AM
