Obituary of David Lee Monroe
ASHEVILLE, NC- David L. Monroe, 70, of Asheville, NC and formerly of Ohio, passed away June 4, 2018. He was born the son of Emma Jennie (Zappitello) and Roger James Monroe on June 8, 1947 in Santa Monica California. He grew up in Conneaut, Ohio and graduated from Conneaut High School Class of 1965, where he ran track and excelled in baseball, earning the nick name, Willy (for Willy Mays), because he was so good. David received his Bachelor and master’s degree in city planning from Kent State University, where he attended during the 1971 war protest shootings.
Mr. Monroe was a city planner for Elyria, Ohio, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina and Hillsboro, North Carolina for many years and owned and operated a bookstore in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.
David loved woodworking and remodeling old Victorian homes and built a home on Orcas Island, Washington. He enjoyed sports, watching college football and basketball, especially the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, North Carolina State Wolfpack and Seatle SuperSonics teams. David was a lover of blues music.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Bardes Monroe; daughter, Lisa (Vanessa Gould) Monroe; step-daughters, Anna (Brad Hatcher) Shadley and Elsa Shadley; grandchildren, Simon Danger and Sam Rocket Shadley Hatcher and Orly Moon McAlpin; sister, Yvonne (Richard) Skippon; aunt, Helen Nappi; niece and nephews, Christine Skippon, Brad Skippon and Richard Skippon; and a great-nephew, Jacob Kray;
He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Emma and Richard Zoratti.
Private family services were observed at the Conneaut Township Park.
