Obituary of Etta M. VanSlyke

Etta M. VanSlyke, 94, of Harbor St., Conneaut, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at the Villa at the Lake, surrounded by her family.
She was born on February 22, 1921 in North Kingsville to Henry B. Poore and Flora M. (Rought) Poore-Carr. Etta graduated from North Kingsville High School in 1939 and attended Kent State University. She married the love of her life, Robert D. VanSlyke on October 4, 1941.
Etta was a member of New Leaf United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading her bible, cooking, baking and reading; most of all she loved spending time with her family. Mom was an inspiration to everyone that knew her, setting a Christ-like example of kindness, generosity and love. She had a deep love of her Lord Jesus Christ, with whom she now resides.
Etta is survived by her daughters, Carole (Marvin) Ward of DeGraff, OH, Joanie (Mark) Lapsevich of Hinckley, OH, Susie (Reese) Snyder of Conneaut, OH and Rita (Rudy) Koman of Kingsville, OH; sons, Gary (Kathy) VanSlyke of Ft. Mill, SC and Steve (Melanie) VanSlyke of Garfield Heights, OH; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandsons; her brother-in-law, Daniel McBride of Silver City, NM. Etta was excited to soon be welcoming her twenty-third great-grandchild and third great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert D. VanSlyke in 2003; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Sharon VanSlyke; sisters, Annie McBride and Phyllis Fields; and a brother, Henry Poore, Jr.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at 12:00 noon at the New Leaf United Methodist Church (New Campus), 110 Gateway Ave., Conneaut with Pastor Jan Walsh officiating. Etta will be laid to rest beside her husband at East Lake Cemetery, Rt 193, North Kingsville.
Family and friends may call at the Thompson-Smith-Nesbitt Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut on Tuesday, July 28, from 5 to 8 P.M. and also on Wednesday, July 29, at the New Leaf Church from 11 A.M. until time of services at 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to New Leaf United Methodist Church, 110 Gateway Avenue, Conneaut to support the New Leaf Child Care and Friday Night Dinners. The family also suggests memorials to the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula and to the Villa at the Lake, 48 Parrish Rd., Conneaut.
Etta's children wish to thank the staff at the Villa at the Lake and the Hospice of the Western Reserve for the loving care they provided their dear mother.
