Obituary of William T. Shellhammer

William T. Shellhammer, 78, of Conneaut passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home. William was born on January 12, 1936 in East Cleveland, Ohio the son of Sidney and Beulah (Schoenbeck) Shellhammer. He graduated from Willoughby Union High School Class of 1954, where he ran track and played football. Bill also attended St. Lawrence College in New York. He attended the former First United Methodist Church in Conneaut. Mr. Shellhammer was the long time manager of City Loan and had retired after 27 years of service. After retirement he worked part time for the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home. William was a 50 year member of the Conneaut Lions Club, where he was past-president and was instrumental in starting the Conneaut Safety Town over 40 years ago. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outdoors and watching the Indians and Browns. Bill enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and attending their sporting events and other activities. Mr. Shellhammer is survived by his three loving daughters, Stacey Shellhammer, Karen (Michael) Schmaeman and Jennifer (Michael) Breeze; grandchildren, Karissa Shellhammer, William "Billy' and Sara Schmaeman and Elizabeth Breeze; and long time friend and mother of his children, Susan Shellhammer. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Karen Lynn in infancy. Funeral services will be held, Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 5 P.M. at the Thompson-Smith-Nesbitt Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, with Pastor Joyce Shellhammer of First Congregational United Church of Christ, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 5 P.M. In lieu of flowers memorials in memory of Bill may be given to the Conneaut Lions Club Eye Clinic and Safety Town, P.O. Box 615, Conneaut. Envelopes will be available. Bill has been a best friend to many; his kindness and sense of humor will be missed. The family finds comfort knowing that Bill has now rejoined his family and many dear friends that passed before him. The family would like to give a special Thank You to the staff of the Hospice of the Western Reserve. The Thompson-Smith-Nesbitt Funeral Home is honored to serve the family and our friend.
